DATA WALLS TO REDUCE FAKES
An immersive public art and data experience tackling substandard and falsified (aka "fake") medicines in Nigeria.
Launching in 2026 | 📍 Nigeria | Currently seeking project partners and funders
Project Overview
The Problem
Substandard and falsified (SF) medicines are a critical but often invisible public health threat.
-
In Nigeria, up to 1 in 5 antibiotics are estimated to be substandard or falsified.
-
SF medicines contribute to treatment failure, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and avoidable deaths.
-
People in low-income and informal communities are most at risk — yet are often excluded from top-down interventions.
-
There's no consistent platform to capture what the public understands, believes, or experiences when it comes to medicine quality.

A.I Generated Visual Mock-up of a Data Wall

Our Solution
-
Data Walls to Reduce Fakes transforms public murals into digital health engagement tools that:
-
Educate communities on how to spot fake medicines
-
Collect anonymous, location-specific insights
-
Bridge gaps between public awareness and policy action
-
These murals use QR codes + Augmented Reality (AR) to unlock mobile-accessible content — visual stories, data tools, and quick surveys — co-created with the very people affected by this issue.
The Augmented Reality (AR) Experience
Scan a Data Wall with your phone to access:
-
What is a fake medicine? — Plain-language definitions with examples
-
Stories from the community — First-person accounts of lived experiences
-
How to spot fakes — Practical tips like checking packaging, spelling, expiry dates
-
Anonymous surveys — Where do you buy your medicine? Have you seen fake drugs?
-
Live data dashboard — Visualised insights shared publicly to drive better interventions
Design & Community Engagement
-
Murals will be co-designed with local artists, youth advocates, and health experts
-
Placed in high-footfall areas (markets, transit hubs, near clinics)
-
Supported by trained Community Champions who promote mural engagement and help sustain impact
-
Messaging is multilingual, visual, and tailored for low-literacy and digitally marginalised users
What We’ll Deliver
-
By the end of the pilot phase, we aim to:
-
Install murals in at least 5 key locations across Lagos
-
Collect over 20,000 anonymous surveys
-
Launch an open-access dashboard with geo-tagged insights
-
Produce a report and policy brief sharing findings with regulators and health agencies
-
Scale the model to other regions and public health challenges
